Breathwork, Fareham

Due to the powerful impact breathwork has on your body, I couldn’t leave it out of my classes.

Here’s why…

Benefits of breathwork:

Putting it simply:

  • Lowers blood pressure and heart rate
  • Decreases muscle tension
  • Increases level of oxygen in blood
  • Increases motivation and energy
  • Improves concentration
  • Strengthens immune system
  • Reduces stress hormone
  • Increases lungs capacity to take in oxygen

Theses benefits all contribute to the preperation of body and mind, for a deep and meaningful yoga flow.

Exploring Methods of breathing:

Pranayama.

The conscious awareness of breath: the life force that both energies and relaxes the body . The term is derived from the skanskrit word, prana, meaning “life force” and ayama, meaning “extension”.

Ujjayi pranayama:

Ujjayi mean ‘victorious’, it brings victory over all obsticles, most importantly, victory over our very own mind and bodies.

But what is it?

Ujjayi is a slow, satisfying deep breath, throughthe nostrils, with a slight constriction of the whisper muscles at the back of the throat that makes the breath both audiable and controllable. When used in posture work (asana), this allows us to slow down our movements and bring greater attention, grace and ease to the postures.

Benefits of Ujjayi breathing:

  • HELPS MAINTAIN EQUILIBRIUM : In the nervous system and composure and clarity in the mind.
  • BREAKS DOWN TENSION: It is a powerful yogic tool, which can break down tension, without becoming tense in the body.
  • Naturally turns the senses inwards.
  • CREATES HARMONY IN THE NERVOUS SYSTEM: Stimulates the vagus nerve, which interfaces with the parasympathetic nervous system and brings about harmony and tranquility in the nervous system.
  • RELAX THE HEART: Breathing with a constriction in the throat affects the ‘carotid sinuses’, which regulate blood pressure in the arteries. The slight pressure from the constriction lowers the blood pressure and heart rate, which leads relaxation physically and mentally.
  • ENERGISE THE CELLS: The ujjayi breath increases the pressure of air in the lungs and expands the surface area for the transfer of oxygen into the cells, which energise them.

Double Breathing pranayama:

What is Double Breathing?

Double breath is the signature breath work of the practice. It was derived from The Living Yoga Method, from my yoga teacher.

Double Breathing is a complete and comprehensive 3 stage-dynamic breathing process to, detoxify, oxygenate, Energise and Rejuvenate the whole system.

More importantly, Double Breathing gives us access to a unique space whereby, our body and mind get to rest and recalibrate to function at a more optimal level.
